Question by DeDi: Need wedding gown advice?
I am considering having a “reception dress” to wear to the second (more fun/late night) part of my wedding reception only if it is inexpensive. Today I saw a dress I very much liked. However, there are a few issues I need input on:

Issue #1
The price in the store was about 0, but when I looked on another store’s website it said the same gown was priced was priced at between 1,000 and 1,500, so I don’t know if the website was incorrect or the other lady at the store was giving me a price break without telling me.
Question #1
Given that the online store (with a physical location) was a reputable one, is it more likely that the lady at the store I was shopping in gave me a price break (without mentioning it) or that the other store’s website was incorrect in posting the price range? (I want to know this because if it already discounted, it might be hard to get anyone to go lower).

Issue #2
While I was at the store, the lady called the manufacturer who told her they are discontinuing the dress on April 1 and that they had 1 of these dresses left at the manufacturer in my size and color. The woman said that if I waited until April 2 to order, the brand will not let her get her hands on it. I find it unlikely that it will sell before April 1 (though not impossible).

a) Do you think the lady at the store is bluffing when she says she will not be able to get the gown after April 1? If not, will the gown be sold to a wholesaler? If so, will the likely price drop? If it is sold to some sort of wholesaler, who might that be and could I then track the dress down at a lower price?
b) What is the typical markup is on a wedding dress so I know how low I might be able to negotiate the price if I am able to find it at a different store once it is discontinued? How much do prices on gowns generally drop once they are discontinued?

I think if the more expensive store has a physical location, you might want to go in and/or phone them to see if the pricing is correct and if they are offering any promotions. If the pricing is correct, I would mention that you found another store that will sell it to you for cheaper. The more expensive store may be more willing to lower the price and give you a bigger discount if they know that it will mean business for them. If the dress is going to be discontinued, the cheaper store may be trying to get it out of the store to make room for something new that is fresh off the line or something more popular.

There is a huge possibility that the cheaper store is bluffing about the dress being discontinued. If this is the case, is the dress worth it to you to by now so you can have it? Depending on your budget, 0 doesn’t sound like a too unreasonable price to be paying.

As per the markup and whatnot of the dress if it is discontinued I can’t help you with that one.
