Shopping for your wedding gown is an exciting experience! Before you begin it’s a good idea to have as much knowledge and information at your fingertips as possible. By learning a few of the terms and expressions used by those trained in the bridal industry, you will be better able to explain exactly what you visualize as the gown of your dreams.

Understanding both the bridal shop lingo and terminology, you will further appreciate their experience in assisting you. Before it’s over you may even have learned the earlier versions of their language called Bridalese! In this article we will cover descriptive terms for train lengths and wedding gown sleeves, albeit, we seldom see sleeves on wedding gowns these days.

Wedding Gown Train Lengths

Sweep Train features a gown with the shortest train, barely sweeping the floor. It may also be called a brush train because it just brushes the floor. The back hem is only 3 to 6 inches longer than the front hem. This is perfect for a chic informal or semi-formal wedding.

Court Train features a gown with a train extending one foot beyond the sweep train.

Chapel Train features the most popular of all train lengths. It flows approximately 4 feet behind your gown and has classic sophistication without the burdensome drag of a longer, heavier train. This is perfect for any wedding gown from the semi-formal to the classic formal.

Semi-Cathedral Train features a train extending five to six feet behind the gown. This is about halfway between a chapel train and the ultra-formal cathedral length. This is perfect for a formal wedding.

Cathedral Train features a cascading train for the most formal of weddings. It extends from seven to eight feet behind the gown, measuring from the waistline. Most often a cathedral train is bustled or removed following the wedding, allowing for easier movement during the reception.

Royal Cathedral Train unfolds to ten feet or more from the waist and is reminiscent of Princess Diana’s voluminous train aka Monarch Train. This train is only used for a very formal wedding and is extremely heavy and cumbersome.
