Taken for Active Assignment Weekly:: ‘Something with Meaning’

Even though I set this assignment I had absolutely no clue what I was going to submit for it. When I saw some of the other fantastic entries coming in my mind went even more blank!

Then I figured there aren’t many things that mean more to me than these two pieces of metal…

WIT: Once Mrs redwood had managed to get her ring off (turned into a major operation!), I put the rings on the side of a wooden planter in the garden. Was a very grey gloomy day…tried adding some flash but preferred it without..

Actually used ‘Live View’ on this shot for the first time – found it very useful as the rings were quite low down so using the viewfinder would have been difficult.

In PS I cropped, adjusted levels, played with curves, tweaked the yellow colour (using Selective Colour adjustment layer – using that all the time now) and sharpened the rings using a layer mask.

So here is the setting for my cousin’s wedding. 150 or so guests in a field on top of a mountain next to a man-made pond with a tent held up by 20 foot birch trees. A cannon, open bar, bonfire, classic rock cover band, turkeys wrapped in bacon cooked in a hole in the ground. A Sysko wedding to beat all Sysko weddings.

Mandy & Phil pulled off an amazing event.

Bigger doesn’t even begin to do it justice.

Virginia in an e-bay wedding gown (IMG_7841a)

Virginia is one of my absolute favorite models to shoot with – I just cannot say enough good things about her. Shooting with her is one of the great pleasures of life and I’m so lucky to have done it several times now.

We did this indoor shoot in South Anchorage way back in December 2009 with Christmas colors in mind. One of the photographers found a wedding dress on E-bay and it fit Virginia perfectly.

Virginia is a busy lass – she has a profile on Model Mayhem and is currently getting ready to compete in some bodybuilding contests. I wish I had one iota of her energy!

Strobist info – I used a set-up with two Vivitar HV-285 flash units triggered by Cybersync remotes. I positioned the flash units at 45 degree angles, one set on 1/4 power, the other on 1/2 power.
